Blepharoplasty Facts
Blepheroplasty,or eyelid lift is a procedure that can take years off your appearance. Although the first blepheroplasty procedures were actually restorative in nature (treating those whose eyelids had been burned off as the result of combat injury or industrial accident), it is most often today a cosmetic procedure that can help you to look more youthful, rested and alert.
Some of the issues that blepheroplasty is effective for include droopiness of the upper eyelids, which can make you look fatigued, and/or similar droopiness of the lower eyelid that exposes the white of the eye beneath your iris. In addition, blepheroplastyis used to remove excess deposits of fat around the upper eyelids that can cause one’s eyes to look puffy; bagginess and/or excess skin and wrinkling under the eyes, and loose sagging skin around the upper eyelids that can actually impair your vision. If this is the case, there is a small possibility that your health insurance may cover part or all of the cost of surgery; otherwise, it is considered cosmetic, meaning you will bear all the costs.
You are a good candidate for blepheroplasty provided that you are in otherwise good health, do not use tobacco or drink alcohol excessively, do not have other serious eye conditions such as dry eye, detached retina or macular degeneration, and are realistic about the benefits of eyelid lift.
Those suffering from hypertension, heart disease or diabetes or a thyroid disorder should try to get these conditions under control before undergoing blepheroplasty, as such conditions can interfere with the healing and recovery process once the surgery is over.
At your initial blepheroplasty consultation, your doctor will want to know about your expectations; why you are seeking eyelid surgery, and who sort of results are hoping to achieve. S/he will also need to know about any drugs you make be taking (prescription of otherwise) as well as herbal supplements, and whether or not you use alcohol or any form of tobacco. In addition, you will need to provide a complete health and medical history, including previous surgeries and any illnesses you have suffered in the past.
Based on this information, your doctor can discuss the options available to you as well as the likely outcomes of surgery and recommended courses of treatment in preparation for your blepheroplasty procedure.
